The play elucidates the clashes between the two families the Montagues and the Capulets. The play initiates when Benvolio, a Montague, tries to stop the fight, but becomes entangled when Tybalt, a Capulet, arrives on the scene. After the fight is over, Prince Escalus, the ruler of Verona, warns them that if there are anymore fights between the families there will be severe consequences. The play takes place in the city of Verona, Italy.
Romeo, the son of Lord Montague, runs into his cousin Benvolio. After some questioning by Benvolio, Romeo confides that he is in love with Rosaline. Benvolio tells Romeo to forget Rosaline and fin another better woman, but Romeo is still lovesick over her. Meanwhile, Paris, a relative of the Prince, wants to marry Juliet. Her father Lord Capulet, told Count Paris to wait two more years because she is only 14. Lord Capulet gives a servant a list of names to invite people to their party. He invites Paris to the party hoping he can make Juliet fall in love with him.
Romeo and Benvolio, still talking about Rosaline, see the Capulet servant holding the list of invitations for the party. Benvolio suggests that they go to the party where Romeo will have the chance to see other women besides Rosaline. Romeo agrees to go with Benvolio to the party, but only because he reads Rosaline’s name on the list and he knows she will be there.
In Capulet’s household, Juliet talks with her mother, Lady Capulet, and the nurse about her marrying Paris. Juliet says she is not yet ready to marry, but will glance at Paris to she if she would be able to fall in love with him.
The party begins and Romeo still depressed follows Benvolio and his humorous friend Mercutio to Capulet’s house. After Romeo enters the house, from a distance he sees Juliet and falls in love with her, forgetting about Rosaline. As Romeo watches Juliet enter her cousin, Tybalt sees him and becomes outraged that a Montague entered the Capulet house. Just as he going to attack him Lord Capulet holds him back and tells him that he wants no fighting occurring in the party. Lord Capulet told him to do all the fighting he wants to do tomorrow and to just let him be. As soon Romeo talks to Juliet the two people fall in love with each other. They kiss, not even knowing each other’s names and they are from opposing families. When Romeo sees Juliet’s nurse he realizes that she is the daughter of the Capulet and becomes upset. When Juliet also learns that the man she has just kissed is the son of Montague, also becomes upset.
As Mercutio and Benvolio leave the Capulet house, Romeo jumps out form the car and climbs the wall of the house not being able to disregard Juliet. He sees her form the place he is hiding and calls out her name. Juliet quickly came down and they swap their love for each other.
Romeo hurries to see his friend and a priest Friar Lawrence, who became shocked that Romeo has falling in love with Juliet and has completely forgotten Rosaline. He agrees to marry the young lovers in secret because he thinks their love might end the war between the Capulets and the Montagues. The subsequent day, Romeo and Juliet meet at Friar Lawrence’s cell and are married. The Nurse, who is knowledgeable of the secret, acquires a ladder, in which Romeo will use to climb into Juliet’s window for their wedding night.
The next day, Benvolio and Mercutio encounter Tybalt who is still furious that Romeo attended Capulet’s party and has disputed Romeo to a duel. Romeo appears and now being a relative of Tybalt pleads the Capulet to hold off the fight until he realizes why Romeo does not want to fight. Appalled with this request for peace, Mercutio says that he will fight Tybalt and the two begin to duel. Romeo tries to stop them by jumping in between the opponents. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm, and Mercutio dies. Romeo, in a rage, kills Tybalt he flees from the scene. After, the Prince declares him forever banished from Verona for his crime; Friar Lawrence assembles for Romeo to spend his wedding night with Juliet before he has to leave for Mantua the following morning.
In her room, Juliet awaits the appearance of her new husband. The Nurse enters, tells Juliet that Romeo has killed Tybalt. Flustered, Juliet suddenly finds herself married to a man who has killed her relative. She calms her self down and remembers that she is still in love with Romeo.
Romeo sneaks into Juliet’s room that night, and at last they carry out their marriage and their love. Morning draws closer, and the lovers say goodbye hoping to meet each other again. Juliet learns that her father, exaggerated by the recent events, now plans for her to marry Paris in just three days. Hesitant of how accept the marriage and to reveal to her parents that she is married to Romeo, is unwilling to marry Paris now that she is Romeo’s wife and seeks for her Nurse’s advice. Her advice to Juliet is to progress as if Romeo were dead and to marry Paris, who is likely a better match besides. Sickened with the Nurse’s unfaithfulness, Juliet disdains her advice and hurries to Friar Lawrence. He fabricates a plan to reunite Juliet with Romeo in Mantua. The night before her wedding to Paris, Juliet must drink a potion that will make her appear to be dead for 42 hours. After she is laid to rest in the family’s vault, the Friar and Romeo will clandestinely retrieve her, and she will be free to live with Romeo, away from their parents’ warfare. Everything turns out to be a disaster the plan is ruined…
